The Red Hat Society is a women's "disorganization" based on the concept that growing old can be fun and frivolous.
There's fun after 50------ The Red Hat Society was started as a group for women over 50 who enjoy dressing in purple outfits and red hats. Together we celebrate the joys of growing old gracefully ---- and playfully. We believe silliness is the comedy of life, and since we are all in it together we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for whatever life takes us next.
What we do------- Nothing. We feel like we have all been so dutiful and so"busy" for so long that we deserve a break. The Red Hat Society was founded as a haven for silliness and unfettered happiness among women of a certain age. There are no "rules" or bylaws of chapter organization. Each chapter structures itself according to the wishes and whims of its members, and the women choose "offices" for themselves as they see fit. There are now over 41,000 chapters round the world. At last count there were 1,815 in Canada. The first convention in Chicago in 2000 had an attendance of 500 ladies and this past June in Las Vegas there were 5000 attendees from 6 countries. The 2006 convention will be in New Orleans. Our chapter is the Red Baronettes and at present we have 18 members. We meet the third Tuesday of each month, mostly at the Senior Centre but do occasionally go to a local restaurant. We join other chapters in B.C. at gatherings called "funventions" and enjoy other outings such as shows, boat trips and garden parties.
